SIMPLE STEPS FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
STEP 1 - STOP SMOKING
This is the single most important factor for us to improve the quality of our health. Smoking is always linked to a host of serious diseases, like cancer, heart ailment, and stroke. If you are a smoker, STOPPING SHOULD BE YOUR FIRST STEP AND PRIORITY to live healthy.
STEP 2 - DIET
The main principle is not to imply calorie or cholesterol counting only, thus, the main principle of diet is to cut down on foods rich in saturated fats and replace them with alot more healthy alternatives - like cereals, pasta, rice, fruit, vegetables, pulses, nuts, olive oils, salad and oily fish. Everyone should follow recent recommendations such as eating five portions of fruit and vegetables per day, and eat oily fish once or twice a week, try drinking six to seven glasses of water per day. Avoid salty foods. Remember, too much salt can raise our blood pressure - which can lead to stroke or heart attack.
STEP 3 - AVOID ALCOHOL
Alcohol in moderation can actually be good according to doctors, experts say that drinking a glass of red wine a day reduces the risk of developing coronary heart disease. Studies say that keeping an alcohol consumption below 2-3 units per day for a man, while below 1-2 units per day if you are a woman. But that doesn't mean that we should all drink alcohol. Remember, too much alcohol consumption is bad to one's health and may lead to serious illness, like cancer of the lungs, esophagus, liver, and emphysema.
STEP 4 - EXERCISE
Being physically active is a very important part in attaining a healthy lifestyle. Spending few hours in the gym for workouts, jogging, swimming, cycling, or even brisk walking can all serve as providing us with healthy exercise. Remember as one gets older, being active physically is very important - it helps in preventing osteoporosis (thinning of the bones) and osteoarthritis (wear and tear of the joints), as well as reducing the risk of developing high blood pressure and heart ailments.
STEP 5 - REDUCING STRESS
These days, we all suffer from various degrees of stress. Time management can sometime be difficult especially in balancing work and family schedules. Adding financial and social struggles in our society. Recognize when we are suffering from stress, check the common symptoms like headaches, irritability, difficulty in sleeping, poor concentration. Remember, identifying the stressor is only the first step in overcoming stress, and the rest lies on how we manage stress and ourselves. Smoking and drinking would not make things easy, rather it makes things more complicated - like were traversing a dangerous path leading to more and severe health problems.
STEP 6 - PRAYER
Being physically fit is important, but being spiritually fit is also of utmost importance, another thing everyone should possess. So for us to have a healthy lifestyle, we should always console ourselves to God by means of prayer and through constant praises that we offer, God will hear all our prayers.
